The federal judge overseeing TUSD’s desegregation case has been asked to reinstate Mexican American Studies courses.
The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund filed the request Thursday on behalf of the Latino plaintiffs in the Tucson Unified School District’s decades-old desegregation case to bring its schools into racial balance.
The plaintiffs argue that the courses, which were suspended last month amid the threat of losing millions of dollars in state funding, are a critical component of TUSD’s post-unitary plan - a court-ordered document that established a good-faith commitment to the future operation of the district.
“TUSD’s ‘suspension’ of these courses follows years of neglect of its obligations to the district’s Latino students … including its obligations to address academic performance gaps as they impact Hispanic students,” the plaintiffs said in the filing.
